Analysis Of Internet Of Things Based On LoRa

Edit:Aifon Technology Co.,Ltd      Date:Mar 18, 2017

First, background overview

In August 2013, Semtech released to the industry a new, based on 1GHz following ultra-long-distance low-power data transmission technology (referred to as LoRa) chip. Its acceptance sensitivity reached a staggering -148dbm, compared with other advanced level sub-GHz chip industry, the highest receiver sensitivity improved by 20db or more, its power consumption is very low and do not need to use expensive temperature compensation crystal (TCXO) Has aroused great concern.

Since the product uses a special spread spectrum technique, this makes it possible for the terminals of different spreading sequences to interfere with each other even with the same frequency. On this basis, the developed concentrator / gateway (Concentrator / Gateway) can receive and process multiple nodes in parallel, greatly expanding the system capacity. Based on the technology of ranging and positioning function will promote its large-scale applications in the field of things.

Second, the key technology and research projects

At present, LoRa and concentrator core technology mainly has the following aspects:

1, the new spread spectrum technology greatly improve the sensitivity of the receiver

Up to 157db of link budget to make it up to 15 km (with the environment). Its receiving current is only 10mA, sleep current <200nA, which greatly delayed the battery life.

2, the gateway / concentrator supports multi-channel multi-data rate parallel processing, the system capacity

A gateway is a bridge between a node and an IP network (via 2G / 3G / 4G or Ethernet). Each gateway can handle 5 million times a day between the communication between the nodes (assuming 10Bytes each time, the network occupancy rate of 10%). If the installation of the gateway in the existing mobile communication base station location, transmission power 20dBm, (100mW), then engage in building a dense city environment can cover about 2 km, and in the lower density of the suburbs, covering up to 10 km. The gateway / concentrator also contains the MAC layer protocol, which is transparent to the upper layer.

3, based on the terminal and concentrator / gateway system can support ranging and positioning

LoRa measurements of distance are based on the airborne transmission time of the signal rather than the traditional RSSI (Received Signal Sterngth Indication), while the positioning is based on the multi-point (gateway) on the point (node) of the air transmission time difference measurement. Its positioning accuracy of up to 5m (assuming 10km range).

Third, LoRa program on the value of China Mobile analysis

1, applicable to the technical characteristics of things

LoRa technology in high performance, long distance, low power consumption, support large-scale networking, ranging and positioning and other aspects of the prominent features, which makes the program (terminal + gateway) to become a large-scale application of the ideal community Technical choice.

2, easy to deploy

The existing 2G / 3G / 4G network is a fixed protocol network, the same protocol terminal can be easily added to the network, based on the LoRa Internet of Things program can also use the same business operating mode. For China Mobile, only need to install the gateway in the existing base station (concentrator) and an Ethernet connection can be. This kind of Internet of Things program is low cost, low power consumption and does not need to apply for license (license-free band), which will become the existing cellular network in the emerging Internet of Things market, a strong complement.

3, China Mobile in the industrial chain in which the location

The bottom of the RFIC chip and the LORA gateway / concentrator that supports the MAC layer protocol can be provided by the hardware vendor, and the complete application software may be provided by software providers (such as IBM, ORACLE, etc.). China Mobile in the industry chain at the top, is conducive to guide the industry chain support and integration. At present, the French operators have been deployed in 5,000 base stations on the LORA network, and positioning technology is ready, will immediately expand to 15,000 base stations. Its six major contract users in three years there will be 15 million devices access to the network. Enabling will digest the cost of the node / terminal itself, the operator only needs to invest in the construction of the base station. Assuming the first year invested 10 million US dollars, so that the size of a network can earn 10 million US dollars the next year, the third year can earn 60 million US dollars. According to China Mobile's existing network size projections, which will produce objective economic and social benefits.

Fourth, the revelation and recommendations

Based on the characteristics and advantages of the LORA program (node + gateway) in the Internet of Things solution, it is recommended that China Mobile actively participate and maintain the relevant projects to continue to follow up the technology, including:

1) Learn more about the functions and roles of LORA Gateway / Concentrator in Internet of Things applications, understand its business model, and export the results, and provide effective technical reference for China Mobile's Internet of Things solution construction.

2) Select a certain number of existing base stations to do the pilot, test the performance of the solution, distance and power consumption (terminal). Understand customer needs, select and define specific applications and their requirements.

3) to guide and integrate the relevant industry chain partners, cooperation to promote the construction of the entire application platform. Improve and optimize application platforms based on customer requirements and feedback.

4) Select the pilot city and scope, start a certain experimental bureau to carry out the scale of the trial test. Prepare for the next step.

5) should pay attention to observe the Internet of Things solutions on the existing 2G / 3G / 4G solution, so that they really make mutual benefit. In the work related to the construction of LORA-based Internet of Things, China Mobile needs to understand and digest the technology itself, fully evaluate the convenience and benefits of the heart program, and further consolidate its position and advantages in the Internet of Things industry chain.
